New featured article — Thai Smile, Hammersmith, W6

This week's update features Thai Smile, W6 9NH, a Thai supermarket, though it has plenty of other regional stuff. Pastes! Sauces! Seasonings! Frozen Things! Tofu! Strange herbs!

There are four new articles: Fish Kitchen in Norbiton, like an upmarket chippie; Saints and Sinners pub in Croydon, lacking ale though; Santok Maa's vegetarian Indian in Thornton Heath, with friendly staff, though not fully structurally sound puri; and Bus cafe towards the Selhurst end of Croydon, which is in a bus.

We have significant updates to The Norbiton and Dragon pub; The Willoughby Arms pub in Kingston; The Park Tavern pub in Kingston; and The Boaters Inn pub in Kingston. Someone's been visiting the area, I'll wager...

Temporary closure is reported for The Queen's Head pub in Kingston. Permanent closures are: Snackpot (in Norbiton); Magma Ghanaian restaurant (in Thornton Heath); and The Gatehouse (in Highgate), which is still a pub just not a Wetherspoons so is DEAD TO US.

Finally is the reported reopening of Na Pura Portuguese cafe in Nunhead.

New Featured Article: Ethos, W1W 8DX

Hullo all!

This week's featured article is for Ethos, a vegetarian eatery in Fitzrovia. It's a self-service buffet set-up, with everything clearly labelled for those with dietary requirements. The food is good quality but apparently the buffet can get a little low-stocked during mid-afternoon, so you may want to stick to lunch and dinner times.

We've got a couple of closures to report: visitors expecting some Ghanaian food at Bongo East in Barking will now be greeted by a Bulgarian cafe instead, while our intrepid RGL team discovered at the weekend that Royal Palace by Surrey Quays station is now a completely different Chinese restaurant called Noodle Family. It still does decent food, though!

Finally, JD Wetherspoon has put The Foxley Hatch in Purley up for sale, and it will close when it's found a buyer.

New featured article — Magma, Thornton Heath, CR7

This week's featured article is Magma, CR7 7ND. It's a small Ghanaian restaurant in Thornton Heath. Expect bright colours and probably not many people, but load up on carby goodness with tasty palaver sauce.

There are new entries for The Thatched House in Barking, a pub with Kenyan food; The Four Quarters, an 'arcade bar' in Peckham; and Chipstead Tandoori, which is surely self-explanatory, but it's an Indian in Chipstead, one of the few places to eat in this part of town, and even then probably missable.

We also have news of the reported closure of The Kennington Bookshop.

Finally, for those who have an interest in this sort of thing, Jeff 'Stonch' Bell has sold up The Finborough Arms and moved on to other things.

New featured article — Tram Stop, Addiscombe, CR0

Big update this week, mainly thanks to Oddbins. Anyway, here we go...

Our featured article is Tram Stop, CR0 6RD, which is not in fact a tram stop but is right next to one (Addiscombe tram stop that is). It's a small coffee shop and cafe. It's child-friendly, and offers newspapers and bookswap books. The food is seasonal and good too!

Two new articles are: Magma, a small Ghanaian restaurant in Thornton Heath with a fine palaver sauce; and Gojo, doing Ethiopian food in a North Kensington basement, better than it sounds.

Four reported closures we've caught up with are: the Marylebone High St branch of Nicolas wine shop; the Barnes branch of Spirited Wines; Just Falafel in Covent Garden; and Japanese restaurant Kibou in sunny Wimbledon.

Those Oddbins renamings (generally from Spirited Wines or Nicolas) are:

* the Oddbins Beer Shop in Blackheath;
* the Notting Hill branch;
* the Wimbledon branch;
* the Kew branch;
* the Baker Street branch;
* the the Crouch End branch; and
* the East Dulwich branch.

New Featured Article - Finger Licking, CR0 2RB

Hello all!

This week's featured article is for Finger Licking, CR0 2RB, a small Ghanaian restaurant close to West Croydon Station. They do takeaway boxes that may or may not include tripe, according to your tripe preference!

Three new articles this week, all for restaurants: Panda in Leytonstone specialises in dim sum with some Sichuan dishes too, while Abuja Connection in Crystal Palace does some interesting-sounding traditional Nigerian food, including fried plantain, egusi stew and - yes, you've guessed it - tripe! Although on their last visit our intrepid reporters preferred the chicken instead. Fischer's in Marylebone is a shiny new Viennese 'cafe' that would love you to believe it was still the 1930s. It's certainly a pleasant environment in which to tuck into your schnitzel*, and most importantly, my Mum likes it a lot.

There are a few pub updates following recent visits: the Postal Order Wetherspoons in Crystal Palace, the Trafalgar in South Wimbledon (which has had a revamp for the better) and Birkbeck Tavern in Leyton.

Finally, the Capitol Wetherspoons in Forest Hill is set to close, although exactly when this will happen is still a mystery.

*I spent at least ten minutes trying to find a pun here and failed - jokes about Austrian food are the würst.

New Featured Article - Genesis Cinema, Stepney

Morning all! A brief update this week to let you know about this week's featured article for the Genesis Cinema in Stepney, which was certainly one of the better things I recall about living in Mile End several years ago, and has been spruced up since then. You can find all RGL's cinema entries (for both independently-run and chain cinemas) on the Cinemas Category page.

There's also a new article for Finger Licking, a small Ghanaian restaurant by West Croydon station that also does takeaway. The honeycomb tripe comes recommended by our Tripe Correspondent, so perhaps I'll make the trip down there for the Ghanaian leg of the 2014 Dining World Cup? (If anyone has any restaurant suggestions for Bosnia-Herzegovina I'd be very grateful...)

New featured article — Bongo East, Barking, IG11

Welcome back, and for this week's update your featured article is the wonderfully named Bongo East, IG11 8RW. It's an unflashy Ghanaian bar and restaurant in Barking, with a nice line in spicy fufu and a tempting kelewele. Seems like it might need a few more customers, so why not pop in next time you visit Barking?

My colleague Kat has added an article about Back on Track Coffee in Marylebone which is a coffee shop with a model train twist and a punning name to match. We also have a Chinese restaurant in Bloomsbury, China City, but you might be better off avoiding it for dimsum.

I've also added a bunch of pubs: The Hack and Hop, near Blackfriars; The Draft House on Goodge Street (or "Draft House Charlotte" as the website calls it); and Mother Kelly's "tap room and bottle shop" in Bethnal Green. All three do great beers, in slightly different ways.

There's an update to Hampstead Heath Station (it's accessible!), and a temporary closure at The Half Moon in Herne Hill. Closed more permanently is The Prince of Wales in Battersea, which I certainly have memories of. Finally, a possible closure is Manus Palm Grove in Stratford, pending further information, but it hasn't been open for a while it seems.

New featured article — Beck's Cafe, Holborn, WC1

Hello again!

This week's featured article is Beck's Cafe, WC1R 4PS, a greasy spoon cafe offering excellent quality breakfast in the Holborn area. bob's been a regular nigh on ~~twenty~~ a year now. In my own opinion, sausages are the key, good quality sausages, can't overemphasise how important these are.

Two new entries include Bongo East, a Ghanaian restaurant/bar in Barking. It offers some tasty fufu. I'm still not sure what that is. Some kind of bread?

Another addition is Albina, another bar/restaurant this time in Plaistow. It offers food from the Ukraine, and is probably a good deal safer to visit than that country is right now (/topical). I would suggest reading our review carefully before you go in, because there's some good stuff if you choose well. Bonus Cyrillic action.

Finally two reported closures are Viajante, whose award-winning chef Nuno Mendes has gone on to other projects (he's currently cooking at the Chiltern Firehouse, which your updater is confident he will not be eating at, what with it being London's current hot ticket). At the other end of the gastronomic spectrum, the E5 Cafe in everyone's favourite postcode has also shut up shop, not long after advertising non-existent Punjabi food, which may perhaps have confused their potential customers and been something of, dare I say it, a marketing error.

New featured article — Akwaah's Kitchen, Tottenham, N17

This week's featured article is Akwaah's Kitchen, N17 8NS, a small African restaurant in Tottenham with a focus on Ghanaian food in particular and serving up some excellent kenkey (read the review if you don't know what that is!).

There are five new articles. We have Sawadika, a Thai restaurant in Holborn; Peckish Cafe and sandwich bar in Sutton; Japanese Canteen, part of a chain near Liverpool Street station; Itsu, another chain restaurant in the same part of town; and The Imperial Arms, a pub in Chislehurst.

Note that The Duke of Edinburgh in Wanstead has temporarily closed (so go to the nearby Nightingale).

Finally, The Elm Park near the tube station of the same name (at the edge of Hornchurch) has permanently closed.
