New featured article — Calthorpe Arms, St Pancras, WC1

Hello all!

Calthorpe Arms, St Pancras, WC1

The featured article is the Calthorpe Arms, WC1X 8JR, a proper old school traditional pub with carpet and locals and tasty unchallenging beer with a friendly atmosphere. I'm not sure I'd call it Bloomsbury, but who has a better name for the area? Is it Holborn?

There are two new articles, again for pubs. There's The Monarch, which is on the Chalk Farm end of Camden Town, and often has gigs on, but certainly could be a lot worse than that suggests. And then there's the new BrewDog outpost in Shepherd's Bush, which is great if you like that kind of bar (industrial look and feel), and that kind of beer (there's nothing on cask, but there's an interesting range of both BrewDog and guest beers in the hoppier vein of "craft").

Finally, the St James Tavern in Bermondsey has closed in its guise as an old-fashioned locals' boozer and has reopened as St James of Bermondsey (website link here for those who want to judge what kind of market it's going for now).

New Featured Article - Tian Fu, W12 8AR

Tian Fu (天府布衣), Shepherd's Bush, London W12

This week's featured article is Tian Fu, W12 8AR (formerly known as Bamboo House), a Sichuan restaurant in Shepherd's Bush that serves loofah! Thankfully it is at the edible stage, before it turns into a scrubbing brush.

We have brand new pages for Caballo Bikes and Cafe, a cafe and bicycle workshop on Clapton's trendy Chatsworth Road, and the Parish, an Irish pub in Wembley that had the hurling on telly during our visit yesterday.

The pages for the Albion in West Kensington and the Lamb Brewery pub in Chiswick have both had significant updates after recent visits, as has my old local the Tichenham Inn in Ickenham, a Wetherspoons wherein I spent many a happy hour during my lunch break in Sixth Form as a responsible adult. Bonus history fact: the pub's name comes from 'Ticheha' (pronounced 'Ticky-ha'), which is how Ickenham was listed in the Domesday Book!

But it's not all rose-tinted Anglo-Saxon fun-times I'm afraid: Ciao Baby Cucina in the Shepherd's Bush Westfield, Cool Monkey in Holland Park, the branch of EAT in London City Airport and the Greyhound pub in Oval have all closed.

New featured article — Great Northern Railway Tavern, Hornsey, N8

Great Northern Railway Tavern, Hornsey, N8

This week's featured article is the refurbished and reopened Great Northern Railway Tavern, N8 7QB on Hornsey High Street.

New articles are: Deli Spice, an Indian takeaway in Lower Clapton; Cakey Muto, a cake shop and licensed cafe on the same street; The Manor Arms, a gastropub in Streatham; and Red Sea, a restaurant in Shepherd's Bush offering food from countries located around that stretch of water.

There's an update to The Old Red Lion, now an Antic pub near Kennington station.

Finally The Rye in Peckham has reopened after a significant refurbishment.

New featured article — Akari, Canonbury, N1

Akari, Islington, N1

Apologies for another late update, but not much has been happening on RGL this past week.

The new featured article is Akari, N1 8LZ, a Japanese restaurant just by Essex Road station, more or less in Canonbury/Islington.

The two reported closures are The Stinging Nettle, a Young's pub in Shepherd's Bush (by Goldhawk Road station), and a rubbish one at that on my experience of it, and The Larder, a restaurant in Clerkenwell (Modern European cuisine, I suppose it would be).

New featured article — Dacre Arms, SE13 5BU.

This week's featured article is Dacre Arms, SE13 5BU, a nice little locals' pub on the Blackheath/Lee borders.

It is quite possibly the best pub for some miles around.

Recent additions to RGL include Le Pain Quotidien on the South Bank. We've also substantially updated the writeup of West Lake in Deptford.

Reported closures are Kiasu in Bayswater, Eastcote Bookshop in Eastcote, Harris's Cafe Rest in Shepherd's Bush, Thai Pavilion East in Lambeth, and Mexicali in Soho.

On the bright side, Green Borders in Leytonstone and Royal Oak (Polly Clean Stairs) in Bexleyheath have both reopened.
