Lao Cafe, a Laotian restaurant in Covent Garden

This week's featured article is the Lao Cafe, WC2N 4HG, a small Laotian restaurant in Covent Garden. Inside it has an industrial look, but there is a huge mural of a smiling person and the food is good.

Two cafes have been reported closed, both permanently: Mimosa, SE24 9HU, a cafe/deli close to the Half Moon in Herne Hill, closed in mid-2019, and Familia Cafe, E7 9BB, a tiny, simple corner cafe by Forest Gate Station, closed earlier this month.

Tierra Peru, Islington, London N1

¡Buenas tardes!

This week's featured article is Tierra Peru, which as its name helpfully informs, is a Peruvian Restaurant in Islington. Reviewers praise the food's flavour and textures, and the portions appear rather generous.

Four new articles have gone up. In the east, we have Familia Cafe, a wee gem of a cafe in Forest Gate which offers up a Spanish breakfast sure to be a hit with garlic lovers. In central London, we have Lao Cafe, a Laotian restaurant in Covent Garden with industrial decor; best to arrive early as it seems to fill up fast. In the south, we have Rocoto Pepper, a Latin American restaurant in New Cross serving perfectly cromulent tea and arepas, along with breakfast choices and a lunch selection that has a vegan option. Just down the road from SE14, Pho Street in Greenwich is a Vietnamese cafe where unsurprisingly, pho and other noodles soups feature heavily.

Updates have been made to:

- Vasanta Bhavan, a totally vegetarian Indian cafe in East Ham
- Compton Arms, a pub near Highbury & Islington Station
- Akari, a Japanese restaurant near Essex Road station
- Parcel Yard, a Fuller's pub inside King's Cross station

Finally, we've two reported closures - China China, a Chinese restaurant in Lewisham and Village East, a bar and restaurant near Tower Bridge

CoffeE7, Forest Gate, London E7

Evening everyone!

This week's featured article is for CoffeE7 in Forest Gate, a veggie cafe with mild TARDIS-like properties. It is part of the Suspended Coffees scheme, where you can pay for an extra coffee (or tea, or a sandwich), to be claimed at some point by whoever needs it.

If you're after some quality Caribbean food in Finsbury Park, you could do worse than the subject of our newest page, Lulu's Caribbean Cuisine on Stroud Green Road. The menu has an entire 'Jerk Pit' section! I am fairly sure I saw Jerk Pit supporting my ex's mate's skatepunk band at the Bull & Gate in 1999.

The nearly-alliterative BG Zakuska Bulgarian Breakfast in Barking has had an update, as has the Mute Swan pub near Hampton Court Palace. In Angel, One and One (it's had many names over the years; I will always know it as 'the vegan buffet place') has reopened after a refurb, but is apparently not 100% vegan these days, so do make sure your mock duck is indeed mock. Finally, the Devonshire pub in Balham is also having a refurb, and is due to reopen in November.

Yu Xiao, Dalston, London E8

Evening all! A bumper week, kicking off with this week's featured article Yu Xiao, a Chinese supermarket on Kingsland High Street (right near Dalston Kingsland Overground station). It's stuffed full of noodles, pickles, tofu and other East Asian groceries.

Our old peripatetic friend the Japan Centre (currently located in Shaftesbury Avenue) has had an update. A slightly different selection of tofu, noodles etc is available there, as well as a vast number of magazines with Japanese boybands on the cover. The Blythe Hill Tavern in Catford has also had an update, including some useful #limeandsodawatch pricing info.

There are plenty of new pages this week, including three fully vegetarian eateries: the Lighthouse cafe in Catford, Indian restaurant Saravanaa Bhavan in Ilford, and the awkwardly-portmanteaued CoffeE7 in Forest Gate. Guess which one has a chandelier! Also new is the Orbit Beers Taproom, just off the Walworth Road (good for train spotting), and Cappuccino in Norbury (good for fried eggs). However fans of egg will no longer be able to obtain tarts from Sun Luen Snack Bar in Chinatown, as it has closed.

Finally, some cinema news: the Bromley Empire and Leicester Square Empire are now Cineworld Bromley and Cineworld Leicester Square respectively.

As our RGL administrator will be away on HOLIDAY next week, there won't be another update until the week after, so that is of course the reason I've waited until Wednesday to post this update. There is no other reason, and anyone saying I've been LAZY will be Quite Wrong.

Xi'An Restaurant, Deptford, London SE8

This week's featured article is Xi'An Restaurant, SE8 4PQ, a Chinese in Deptford, specialising in the food of the Shaanxi province, but look we've been over this before in a previous update. Some excellent pulled-style pork, and lots of numbing peppercorns.

Three new articles are: Sabor Peruano, a Peruvian restaurant by the Elephant; Vijay's Chawalla, Indian vegetarian in Upton Park; and Bubbles and Tea in sunny Stratford, for all yr E London bubble tea needs.

There's an update to the entry for Prince of Wales pub in South Wimbledon.

Finally we've heard this week of the closure of Cafe Crema in New Cross, and Pizza Lupa takeaway in Bermondsey (now a Firezza).

Gate Islington

Afternoon everyone! A quick update this week.

Our weekly featured article is for The Gate, EC1V 4NN, a busy, upmarket vegetarian restaurant in Islington. They have lots of options for people with different dietary requirements (i.e. not just mushroom risotto) and do a really good blueberry brioche pudding.

There are also two new articles: the tongue-twisting City Sweet Centre in Manor Park, which sells Indian sweets and savoury snacks, and Maamala's in East Ham, a cheap and cheerful South Indian cafe. I will leave it up to you to guess which one of these has a coin-operated massage chair!

Afternoon everyone!

Our featured article this week is for the excellent Abeno, WC1A 1LY, a small Japanese restaurant near the British Museum, specialising in okonomi-yaki. This is a sort of omelette that the staff cook in front of you on a hot plate, and I can confirm it is delicious (though it seems they no longer have the intellectual-property-defying OLYMPIC mix on the menu).

There's a brand new article for a brand new pub, in the shape of the Forest Tavern, in Forest Gate. Well, brand new might be pushing it - it's a revamp of the old Railway Tavern. It probably won't surprise you that it's part of the Antic chain, and as a result is pretty similar to its siblings in Forest Hill, Leytonstone and other places I am failing to buy a flat in. In further Antic news, Jam Circus, their pub in Brockley, is finally going to be reopening in November following a fire last year.

Sadly there's also a pub closure to report. according to their website, the Pakenham Arms in Clerkenwell has been sold off, mirroring the fate of the Royal Mail sorting office opposite. We've many happy evenings there, and are sad to see it go.
