New Featured Article: Holborn Whippet, WC1A 2QH

Morning RGL posse! We are fast approaching the end of a jam-packed 2012 -- a year in which I ate the tastiest mushroom I have so far encountered. In order to take stock of this momentous fungus and all the other awesome food and drink we've consumed over the last 12 months, the RGL blog will be taking a short break until the new year.
Until then, feast your eyes upon this week's featured article, the Holborn Whippet, a 'craft' (i.e. 'half-decent') beer joint in -- brace yourselves -- Holborn, just at the top of Sicilian Avenue. It's run by the same dudes as the Euston Tap and has several gravity taps for dispensing tasty cask ale. It can get pretty busy and noisy in there but I can confirm that the beer is great.
New to RGL are Caprice, a Balkan/Mediterranean restaurant in Croydon that shows intriguing Bulgarian soap operas on the telly (with the sound down), and Cigala, a tapas place on Lamb's Conduit Street with disappointing chorizo. I don't know about you but the thought of chorizo being non-tasty makes me very sad.
Clanging chimes of doom watch: the Chesham Arms pub in Hackney is sadly shut, as is Tuli in London Bridge (to the dismay of some RGLers attempting to have lunch there). Cantina in Holborn is now 100% confirmed as closed too, but Unpackaged has now reopened in Haggerston for all your hippy grocery needs.
See you in 2013!

I am v sad about Tuli because it was super-handy for child-friendly dim sum lunches with people from far-flung places (Flitwick! Loughton!)

By the way, if anyone wants to visit the new pub The Crown in Leytonstone High Road, on Friday night the only real ale on was Doom Bar, the best gin they had was Bombay (but for a while they said it was just Gordons) and the toilets are not accessible, having three steps to enter and fairly short cubicles. I was disappointed. I'll stick to the Red Lion, who today hosted a free xmas meal for OAPs, with presents and bingo. Im planning to eat there on Thursday.
